Hiking

Loon Lake Lodge is centrally located with two on-site hiking trails and over 75 miles of hiking trails within 15 minutes of our lodge.  Stop in the lodge for suggestions, directions and maps.

Just a few of our favorites:
  • Bridal Veil Falls (on-site)– A gorgeous waterfall, you’ll see why it gets its name if you’re up for the trek. There’s two ways of reaching it: One way is hiking the eight mile round trip via the Border Route Trail. Along the way, stop and have a picnic on top of the giant rock slabs overlooking Gunflint Lake and Canada. The second way involves a 1.5 mile paddle on Loon Lake, a short 40 rod portage into Crab Lake, a ¾ mile paddle on Crab Lake, and then a 2 mile hike to the Falls giving you both an arm and leg workout.
  • Loon Lake Overlook (on-site)– From our parking lot, hike ¼ mile up on top of our property to get a beautiful overlook of Loon Lake.
  • Bryce Breon Trail (Loon Lake Public Boat Landing)– This lakeside trail follows the north shoreline of Loon Lake through cedar forests with perfect picnic spots. It’s relatively flat, easy, and has a campsite ¼ mile in.
  • High Cliffs (Loon Lake Public Boat Landing)– A one mile round trip to a stunning overlook of Canada, Gunflint Lake and Gunflint Lodge.
  • Honeymoon Bluff- Amazing panoramic views of the sunset! This 1.5 mile round trip trail has a long set of modern stairs that lead to a spectacular rocky overlook of three different lakes in the Boundary Waters.
  • Magnetic Rock- Go see a 60 ft. rock with strong magnetic attraction on a three mile round trip easy trail. When in season, this is a very popular blueberry picking spot.
  • Centennial Trail- Grab an interpretive trail map at the trailhead of this 3.3 moderate hike. See the original Paulson mine test pits from the 1890’s and walk the rock cuts and rock trestles created for the Port Arthur, Duluth, and Western Railroad.
